WHAT'S THE RIGHT AIR CONDITIONER MAINTENANCE SCHEDULE FOR YOUR HOME?

When spring is upon us, it’s the perfect time to ensure the efficiency of your air conditioner. Not only does regular maintenance keep your  A/C  running efficiently, it also saves you money by extending the life of the unit. Here we cover when to schedule your A/C  maintenance as well as what's involved in an A/C  checkup with Boonstra.

When is the best time to schedule an A/C check up?

When it comes to maintenance, any time is better than never. By scheduling your AC  check up in the spring, you’ll avoid the long waits and higher prices associated with the upcoming peak season. Early air conditioner maintenance can prevent small problems from becoming more expensive repairs down the road. We recommend an annual pre-season check-up to keep things in working order, preferably before the hectic cooling season begins.

What’s involved in an A/C  check up with Boonstra?

Common checkpoints included with a Boonstra A/C  maintenance call;

  • Refrigerant levels are checked. Low refrigerant levels indicate a leak that must be located and repaired immediately. If left unattended,  your compressor could burn out which could result in one of the most costly A/C  repairs you'll ever have to pay for.
  • All electrical components and controls are checked to make sure they are functioning correctly.
  • Evaporator and condenser coils are checked and cleaned. Dirty coils reduce the energy efficiency and cooling ability of your A/C  unit.
  • Thermostat is adjusted if needed, which  ensures that your A/C  isn’t working overtime.
  • Drain pans and lines are flushed to prevent water from backing up and causing damage to floors, walls, etc.
  • Filters are checked, cleaned and/or replaced.

DIY maintenance tasks you can perform on your A/C unit

The following are a few basic maintenance tasks that you can perform on  your  A/C unit;

Caution: If you are planning on performing any maintenance on your  A/C unit yourself, make sure the power to the system, both to the condenser and to the evaporator assembly is turned off to avoid injury.

1. Replace or clean filters

Filters easily get dirty and clogged from all the pollution in the air. A dirty filter can increase energy costs and damage your equipment, leading to early failure.

We recommend that you inspect, clean, or change air filters in your central air conditioner once per month throughout the cooling season. Your Boonstra contractor can show you how to do this.

2. Clean coils

Both your A/C’s  evaporator coil and condenser coil collect dirt, so check your evaporator coil every year and clean it as necessary.

3. Prep for winter

When winter comes, we recommend that you cover your A/C  unit to protect it from harsh winter weather. Another option is to remove it and store it indoors.
